The Access Specialist ensures equal access by providing students with disabilities academic materials in alternate formats (e.g., Braille, electronic, print formats, etc.); instructs students on independently accessing course material using assistive technology; works directly within the Assistive Technology Lab providing technical direction and support to the campus community in the area of course accessibility for students, faculty and staff.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completed Bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, computer information systems, special education, social work, disability services, occupational therapy, rehabilitation counseling, or closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • One year of demonstrated professional level experience of effectively working with students or other individuals with disabilities with varied technology needs.

Professional level experience is defined by the Colorado Division of Human Resources: A position that involves the exercise of discretion, analytical skill, judgment, personal accountability, and responsibility for creating, developing, integrating, applying, or sharing an organized body of knowledge.  Colorado revised statute (C.R.S. 24-50-135(1) allows colleges to exempt positions from the State Personnel Classified System that are determined to be professional level work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completed Master's degree in in information technology (computer science, computer information systems, special education, social work, disability services, occupational therapy, or rehabilitation counseling or technology) or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Two or more years of documented professional level experience assessing, training, and supporting individuals with disabilities with varied technology needs on the use of Assistive Technology in a higher education environment.
  • Two or more years of documented professional level work experience using accessibility auditing and testing tools and strategies (ex. Optical Character Recognition (OCR), AbbyFine Reader, scanners, Braille embossers, etc.)  to assess, test, report and remediate materials for digital accessibility.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience complying with WCAG 2.0
  • Strong understanding of disability law at the state and federal level including, but not limited to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
  • Advanced computer knowledge, proficiency, and skills. Must be able to function in Mac, PC, tablet, and mobile phone environment.

Salary range is firm $43,000.00 to $46,350.00 annual gross.  Applications accepted until position is filled.  

Must be a State of Colorado resident or able to relocate to Colorado prior to first date of employment.

Essential Functions  

Facilitate the production of materials for alternate formatting (AF) (e.g. e-text, MP3, large print formats, through Access Text Network, Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, Bookshare, CourseSmart, Publisher sites, etc.) Manage the acquisition and implementation of assistive technology (AT). Assist in the function of the Assistive Technology (AT) Lab. Conduct AF/AT training/presentations/instruction for students, faculty and staff.

AF/AT Specialist Responsibilities

  • Evening and some weekend work/shifts may be required.
  • Customize alternate format materials based on students’ needs.
  • Edit/convert/duplicate/format files for student accessibility; maintain electronic files and records for the production and editing processes of course materials.
  • Maintain AF/AT hardware and software inventory; determine the AT needs of the department.
  • Research and recommend the procurement of AF/AT hardware and software for classrooms, labs, accommodative testing, and campus-wide use.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and copyright laws regarding the provision of accommodations.
  • Monitor and maintain compliance with FERPA privacy regulations and consulting with college faculty, staff, and students regarding students’ AF/AT needs.
  • Collaborate with the team regarding the improvement and implementation of policies, procedures, and the assessment of AF & AT accommodative services.
  • Collaborate with the ACCESSibility Services’ Director and PPCC ITSS staff regarding:
  • The installation, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting and resolving hardware and software interface issues; conflicts with upgraded software versions; vendor products within multiple applications and/or environments.
  • Communicating and coordinating student needs related to AF/AT.
  • Collaborate with AT software companies, textbook publishers, college departments (bookstore, library, and distance learning, ITSS, etc…)
  • Assist the ACCESSibility Services team in advising faculty, staff, students, area schools and community agencies on assistive technology equipment, compatibility, and accessibility issues.
  • Evaluate new or upgraded technologies to determine accessibility and compatibility with current hardware and software platforms, and current student functional needs.

Assistive Technology Lab Operations

  • Monitor and manage the instruction of assistive technology courses and training sessions to ensure that all classes/labs are meeting as scheduled and that records are maintained as required. Review and update course content through ongoing evaluation and education.
  • Develop, deliver, monitor, and manage AF/AT independent study courses in accordance with college policies and procedures. 
  • Manage the production of and provide formatted course materials for students with disabilities in the AT Lab.

Provide AF production and AT training and reference materials for the institution.

  • Provide training and work direction to student staff and hourly staff.
  • Collaborate with ACCESSibility Services’ Director and staff as necessary to:
  • Provide training to students on the use of AF/AT materials, hardware/software.
  • Prepare, review and update training and reference content through ongoing evaluation, education and regularly researching and adopting effective Alternate Format and Assistive Technologies.
  • Keep current with new assistive technology concepts, navigation, and functionality to convey accurate and effective information.
  • Develop and provide accessibility training for faculty and staff throughout the institution.

Disability Specialist Responsibilities

  • Conduct accommodation reviews with students to determine reasonable accommodations to ensure accessibility to academic programs and services.
  • Read provider documentation to evaluate and determine eligibility for reasonable accommodations that meet the following regulations: ADA and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
  • Assist students with study skills, time management and organization skills.
  • Assess to determine students’ AF/AT needs.
  • Maintain chronological records of recommendations to students.
  • Facilitate the implementation of accommodation plans by establishing and maintaining communication between student and faculty and consulting with campus and community resources.
  • Participate in student case conferences.
  • Collaborate with the team in updating community resource information that assists students with disabilities.
  • Consult with faculty and staff, and participate in program review, development, and cross training.

Additional Duties 

  • Accommodative Testing scheduling, proctoring, tracking, administration, data collection, etc.
  • At the direction of the Director /Assistant Director: modify existing student, supply and equipment inventory forms/spreadsheets/databases.
  • Extensive research in various areas; (human services, technology, higher education, etc.).
  • Assist with administrative front office duties as needed.
